Did you know that genetically modified organisms are found in sixty to eighty percent of processed foods and that the United States Food and Drug Administration does not test any of these foods beforehand to see if they are safe consume? (Wohlers 73). Genetically modified organisms are defined as organisms whose DNA has been modified in a way that would not occur naturally. The purpose of developing these genetically modified organisms was to improve products by creating greater disease tolerance. While it's great to want to keep disease out of our foods, the science that alters our food has no guarantees that it actually protects against disease and has the potential to actually harm our bodies, the environment, and the economy. There are sixty-two major countries that require labeling of genetically modified foods, unfortunately the United States is not one of them (Wohlers 73). Most of these countries believe that genetically modified organisms present much higher risks than benefits, because something could easily go wrong, such as an allergic reaction to whatever is put in the food. Fortunately, Americans have started to be more aware of what they eat and how it negatively affects their bodies and their economy. Therefore, there has been a heated debate about whether genetically modified organisms should be required to be labeled as such when purchasing food. The admission of genetically modified organisms into our foods entails numerous negative consequences, the most obvious of which are the resulting damage. can cause to your body.
