The rhetorical situation that triggered Velez's research is that most college students don't graduate even within the four years they are in college. As Velez delved into the problem, he noticed that most people don't even apply to college once they finish high school. Velez's research goes into detail about why college students drop out of college. The thesis that Velez becomes aware of is that we should try to understand what types of students drop out of university.
