Topic > The Beatles Essay - 712

The Beatles are undoubtedly one of the most famous musical groups of all time. Their musical period as a band lasted just under a decade, but their musicianship still resonates several decades later, even after their relapse in the early seventies (Gammond, 1993). The Beatles, a musical group from Liverpool, England, consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, four young people who would change social culture throughout the world. Just as their musical career skyrocketed in 1962, so did their fallout. In their wake, the band influenced many aspects of social culture both positively and negatively. The 1960s were a decade marked by social revolution, especially in Europe and America. This was attributed to the recovery of many countries from the effects of World War II, the negative effects of which had spilled over into the 1950s. The 1960s were therefore the first time that many countries had the economic and social capacity to be more productive following the post-World War II recovery era. There was more money and time to spend on other activities such as music and films, and not just on rebuilding nations affected by the effects of the post-war period. This was also the era of the Hippie movement, which influenced many young people, as well as the Beatles (McGuigan, 1992). The Hippie movement was a youth movement with a strong base in San Francisco in the United States. The movement was associated with and openly supported drugs and popular music, and rock and roll was among the popular music of the time (McGuigan, 1992). The Beatles, being young, were also influenced by this movement, which resisted and challenged the old world order. As seen in The B...... middle of paper...... Due to this anglicization of music, especially in Europe, English began to be widely accepted as the preferred language in music, thus influencing the culture society of many countries. The Beatles were also against the Vietnam War and supported peace among the citizens of the world. This call was echoed by their fans around the world and changed the perception of war against innocent citizens. As talented and controversial as The Beatles were, it is my opinion that they positively influenced the social culture of many. From encouraging cohesion through the use of the English language, to advocating for equality among all social classes, to creating awareness of the effects of war on citizens, the Beatles were and still are one of the greatest musical groups ever. They had a great impact on social culture, especially in Europe and the Americas.
