Did you know that the Roman Republic had a huge influence on the government of the United States? By studying how the past connects to the present, you discover how many things have changed and remained the same. Without the Roman Republic, the United States government may not have the structure and organization it has today! The Roman Republic was a government, governed by an intricate constitution, based on the idea of separation of powers. The Roman Republic began in 509 BC, after the end of the Roman Monarchy and lasted over 450 years. The constitution of the Roman Republic was greatly influenced by the power struggle between wealthy families, the patricians, and other Romans who did not come from famous or wealthy families, the plebeians. Their government was divided into three main sections, much like the legislative, executive, branch, and judicial branch. Nowadays, the Senate and Assembly resemble the legislative branch. In the Roman Republic, the Senate was the most powerful group. The Senate passed all laws and collected taxes. The second part of this branch was the assembly, and the assembly was elected by the Romans from among the plebeian class. The assembly elected consuls, tribunes (representatives of the plebeian class) and issued laws. All the members of the Senate were part of the patrician class and at the head of the Senate there were two consuls. The Consuls controlled the Roman army and to become a consul you had to be elected by a majority of all the citizens of Rome. Consuls are like our president and executive branch. Although the method of separation of powers comes from the Roman Republic, this is not all that came from the Roman Republic that became part of the United States... middle of the paper... it will certainly change over time, both positively and negatively, but ultimately I believe the overall structure of American government will change! I think that, in many years, our government will have the same fate as the Roman Republic. I expect that the US government will last for hundreds of years yet, but will probably eventually collapse, for many reasons. In conclusion, without the Roman Republic, the United States government may not have the structure and organization it has today!
