According to Students Against Hunger, “one in seven U.S. residents was at risk of going hungry last year.” Additionally, 3.5 million people were forced to make themselves at home in parks, under bridges, in shelters or in cars. This problem wasn't as prevalent five years ago, but since 2010 the homeless population has seen an exponential increase. the homeless population saw an expected increase of 5%, in other words that is 74,000 more homeless people in 2013 compared to 2010. This problem can have its roots in the stock market crash of 2008. Bankruptcies occurred in 2008 of large financial institutions, due to the exposure of the protection of subprime loans and credit default swaps issued to insure such loans. This caused a global crisis, which caused 15 banks to fail, while many others were saved through government intervention or takeovers of banks by other banks. It was so tragic that on October 11, 2008, the head of the International Monetary Fund declared that the global financial system was “on the brink of systemic collapse.” This failure caused the loss of large sums of money around the world. (Stock Market Crash) When a large sum of money is taken out of the system, there are definitely some repercussions. The monetary value of the necessities of life has continued to increase, to help put money back into the system, while the minimum wage has not increased accordingly. This caused things like food to become too expensive for people to afford. Now, just because someone has a job doesn't mean they can live comfortably. It's hard enough to support yourself in this economy, but supporting others also becomes... doing as an individual we can do as a group. While one pebble in a river does not change the movement of the water, a thousand pebbles can. Works Cited “Stock Market Crash.” Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, April 5, 2014. Web.
