“Family Guy” and its Asian Stereotypes“Family Guy” is well known for being a cartoon of shame and rude depictions of real-life events. Asian stereotypes were no exception in “Family Guy” portrayals. In many of the stereotypical Asian scenes of "Family Guy", one of the episodes shows a scene where an Asian female driver causes damage on the highway while exiting the highway itself. The following is dialogue from the scene: ASIAN FEMALE DRIVER. How many signals do I need to cross a lane? ASIAN FEMALE DRIVER. None? ASIAN FEMALE DRIVER. I turn around now, good luck to everyone else. (Season 5 Episode 6, Family Guy) Over the decades, Asians and women have been stereotyped as the worst drivers of all. With the combination of both, "Family Guy" portrays the Asian stereotype by depicting this scene about an Asian female driver's ultimate failure to safely exit a highway. Aware of Asian stereotypes, just like any other racial stereotype, Asian stereotypes have been and always will be present in our society. The fact that Asians can be stereotypically portrayed in the media demonstrates the lack of voice of this minority group. Asian stereotypes are taken lightly by others, but at the same time heavily by the Asian population. Whether we like it or not, the Asian stereotype isn't going away forever. As individuals of an intellectual species, we must recognize the power of a racial stereotype and the possibility that it remains an eternal issue. To put this problem in another perspective, we must aim to become aware of it by watching these Asian films that are stereotypical of what the average American watches on TV or in the cinema. Even if the Asian characters seem harmless (Jackie Chan in the “Rush Hour” series) or funny… middle of paper… your ears. Dir. James Purdum and Peter Shin. Perf.
