The Merriam Webster definition of a museum is “an institution dedicated to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; also: a place where objects are displayed." To find an artifact, the first thing I thought of was going to a museum because it seemed like the most obvious place to find a piece of history. As I searched through four museums and sanctified artifacts set aside there, I found nothing that would stimulate my personal interest in studying the humanities Alas, I was struck by a cemetery that would be perfect for my interest in the customs of my personal religious beliefs a child to. I had never really thought about it. What better place to find a permanent object of value than a cemetery. On the corner of Cypresswood and I-45, I started poking around a cemetery that I had no real interest in, or so I thought. The cemetery housed about twenty burials, each a little different, but one particularly interested me. The tombstone read Friedrich August Wunsche, Geb 20 July 1837, Gest 3 May 1897. I decided on this tombstone for its architecture and. the historical period of the person it commemorated; it is the only surviving memory of this man. Etched into the bottom of the headstone were his family's last words to the world, faded and eroded by the winds of time, they were left in German and unintelligible to most modern Americans. The words had a meaning that seemed to say: In you, O Lord, I have put my trust, which was repeated on the other gravestones in modern English. This is a sort of sanctuary of his life; this man lived in the Union, probably fought for the confederacy, and then died when the United States was back in... middle of paper ......deeper understanding of what I believe I have knowledge of relatively good understanding of what I believe, this project has given me a greater understanding than I could have gained without it. It made me reflect not only on the religious aspect of life, but on human customs in general. Christians were not the first to bury their dead, as my humanities studies have shown, enlightening me to new and different ideas about the afterlife explained through the eyes of past humanity.
