Illegal immigrationWhat is deviance? Deviance describes actions or behaviors that go against the social norms of a society. There are two types of deviances. Positive deviance is when someone overconforms to society's norms. As a straight "A" student in middle or high school, this makes everyone else dislike them because they make them look bad by doing more. Negative deviance is the more recognized of the two. It is when someone conforms to the norms of society. For example, a student who skips class and doesn't do any work. Deviance is determined by three circumstances. Social status and power of the individuals involved; social context in which the behavior occurs; and the historical period in which the behavior occurs. Social status and power also manipulate deviance. During times of racial segregation whites were responsible, if a white man and a black committed the same crime the white man would receive the least punishment, if any, while the black man would get the most and be labeled as a deviant for his crime. On another note, deviance is based on social definition and a period of time. For immigrants, if they were in their homeland and came to America for a better life, it is considered a norm for their homeland. However, if they are in America and have not completed the process necessary to become a citizen, then they are considered deviant for violating our norm, which is to go through the entire process to become a citizen. In some countries illegal immigration is not considered deviant because it is the norm, but in the United States it is against the norm. Involvement, the more we get involved with the people in that group the more we seek their approval causing us to conform. Beliefs, when people share the same norms and values ​​they are less likely to argue and resist conformity. If social ties are weak, the chances of becoming deviant increase. Those who do not have these four basic elements of social bonding will have little respect for society and will do whatever they want. Illegal immigrants, from their point of view, are not deviants at all; a person has the right to want the best for himself. If most of your family members or friends are in America, you will find ways to join them because of your strong attachment to them. America offers better job success and better education. If a person's goal is to achieve a higher status in the job market and the only way to do so is through better education
