Topic > China's One-Child Policy - 693

Many of us in the United States have choices about how many children we have, but many other countries and cultures have different opinions about how children are treated. I will explain, China and India will then go into detail about what I believe will be best for India's future. After growing by more than 1.2 billion people, China has become the largest population in the world. (8) In 1979, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping limited China's population by imposing the one-child policy. (14) The one-child policy provides population controls so that each couple can have only one child. If each couple has only one child, they receive benefits such as: an impact on free healthcare and education, 3 months of high school leave, as well as a job for the child once he or she reaches adulthood and a sum of money. (11) If you decided to have a second child and did not have an abortion, you would have to repay all the benefits the government gave you. (11) This does not include twins however, if you have twins you can keep both children and each child receives benefits. (11) In many ways this seems like a fantastic idea for conserving resources, keeping jobs, and providing for families, but because of the important role men play in Chinese society, girls are almost frowned upon because they are the men to carry on the traditional name as well as take care of their parents and grandparents when they are older. When a couple discovers that they have conceived a daughter, many decide to have an abortion. (13) This has an impact on fertility rates which cause China to drop to 1.6%. (2) This means that the amount of women decreases, so over time the population will end up being made up only of men. Although one can see the positive aspects of the one-child policy, there are also disadvantages to the program. India has enough people to influence one-sixth of the world's population. (9) India, compared to the United States, contains more than ten times the population per square mile. While the growth seems like a small number, at just 2% each year, ultimately there are more than 18 million new children to feed and care for. (9) The reason for this large number of births is that due to health problems many children die.
