“Am I worried about kids who play video games 10 hours a day? Yes, but I'm equally concerned about someone who spends 10 hours a day doing one thing” (Wood, n.d.). Since the 1950s, scientists have conducted studies and research on the effects of violence in the media. They didn't start focusing on violence in video games until the late 1980s (Carey,2013). This raises the question many people ask in today's culture. Will the growth of violence in video games impact younger generations? Through these studies they have gained a lot of knowledge about the effects that video games can have on the brain. The video game industry is important and has been thriving for decades. It is crucial to answer the question of whether or not video games are harmful to its players, as the industry is getting bigger and bigger. Video games can have negative effects on players, but only if they are not used responsibly. Everyone can agree that all types of media have become more violent over the past decade. The real question is whether this change in media has had a negative effect on viewers. That's why researchers have been studying this topic for over sixty years. They began focusing on violence in video games when it became one of the most important media markets. This industry grossed over $20.1 billion in 2012. The fact that over 51% of all Americans have played or play video games regularly makes it one of the top media outlets around (Wood, 1999). These fears of the video game industry are similar to the initial fears and panic about rock music, Dungeons & Dragons, and comic books. These media sources were studied in the 1950s to try to discover the effects they had on the consumer. This… middle of paper… outrageous crimes.
