Topic > Exploring Justice in Plato's Republic - 1030

All freedom requires a compromise between the rights of the individual and the goals and obligations of the state. Plato proposed that his city should be one in which philosopher kings decide who can mate, to produce only the strongest and most intelligent children and discard any defective children (460c). Furthermore, he stated that all children should be taken away from their parents immediately to remove all loyalty to the family and to ensure loyalty only to the city. The purpose of these requirements was to guarantee the propensity for the public good and to guarantee the sacrifice of personal interests. Individual freedom can keep human beings “chained” to instantaneous empirical needs, rather than to the broader range of human, especially philosophical, potential.
