Topic > The life of Mohandas Gandhi - 1032

“Be the change you want to see in the world” (Gandhi). Gandhi, a world-famous political and spiritual leader, the symbol of free India, an inspirational man who fought for the rights of his people through his words rather than his actions. Mohandas Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India, on October 2, 1869. Mohandas (childhood name) Gandhi was an Indian nationalist leader known for leading India to independence through nonviolent civil disobedience. First, what Gandhi did in his early life will be discussed. Secondly, what he achieved in South Africa/India. Finally, because he is considered the father of modern India and his beliefs Gandhi was a child of the 18th century. Gandhi was born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He came from an upper class Hindu family and his father Karamchand Gandhi was a community leader. When Gandhi was young he was shy, kept to himself and never thought of becoming a world-renowned political and spiritual leader. As a child Gandhi was not the perfect child that many would have thought him to be, Gandhi did many things outside the norm of his community such as eating meat, smoking and stealing a small amount, however Gandhi regretted these things later in his life . As was tradition where he grew up, Gandhi's parents arranged a marriage for him at the age of 13 with a 14-year-old girl Kasturbai Makhanji. Marriage at a young age may seem strange to today's North American society, however it was the normal way of doing things where he grew up. Gandhi realized that there was nothing that could decide his future in India. In September 1888, Gandhi decided to move to London, England, to pursue a career, leaving behind his wife and son. He attended the University of London to study law. While in London Gandhi promised his mother to remain vegetated... middle of paper... for any reason. He was the leader in the struggle for self-government in India; he stood up for his country's independence against Great Britain. He fought for peace in his country and started a non-violent protest (Ahimsa). Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most inspiring leaders ever. Gandhi believed in nonviolence, which led India to independence and inspired civil rights and freedom movements around the world. He was seen as a hero in India, but was not liked by everyone, so much so that later in his life he was murdered. Gandhi's teachings have influenced people for decades and many more to come. He not only influenced regular society, but also other world-famous leaders. Martin Luther King transformed Gandhi's civil rights movements into a movement of his own. Martin said: “Christ provided the spirit and motivation while Gandhi provided the method.”
