November 10, 1775 is revered as the birthday of the Marine Corps and its birthplace is Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern, to raise two battalions of Continental Marines, under the command of the Captain. Samuel Nicholas, as an amphibious fighting force that later, in March 1776, participated in their first foreign raid, in the Bahamas (www.globalsecurity.org). After the signing of the Treaty of Paris and the end of the American Revolution, the Continental Marines disbanded and were reestablished on July 11, 1798 as the United States Marine Corps. One of the most famous deployments in which the USMC took part was operations against the Barbary pirates, along the “coasts of Tripoli,” as stated in the Marine Corps Hymn. “During the Mexican War, Marines captured enemy seaports on both the Gulf and Pacific coasts. While landing parties of Marines and Sailors were capturing enemy ports, a battalion of Marines joined General Winfield Scott's army at Pueblo and marched and fought all the way to the "Halls of Montezuma," which would later become the front line of the Marine Corps Hymn. . (www.globalsecurity.org) The Marines did not play a major role in the Civil War, but their most important battles were fought alongside the Navy, in situations involving blockades, at sea. But even then, most of the Civil War's fighting was fought on deep land, far from the coast. Probably the first heavy deployment of Marines occurred during World War I, where the USMC made itself known to European forces fighting primarily in France. It was because of the combat operations of “Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Michiel, Blanc Mont and the final Muesse-Argonne offensive”, which gave the nickname “You must...... middle of paper.... .. based on your height, along with the IST or initial strength test, which requires you to do 2 pull-ups, a 1.5 mile time at 1.30pm, and 35 sit-ups in two minutes. The Marine Corps is the smallest among all other branches, with a total of 250,000. If anyone looks at the Marine Corps as an opportunity to get benefits or a free education, they are looking at the wrong branch of service. All branches of service have the same benefits, but the Marine Corps focuses more on the benefits of honor and quality citizenship that you get from being in the Marine Corps, whether it's 4 years or 20 years. Any other recruit training will, right from the start, call you by the title Soldier, Sailor, or Airman, but if you have what it takes to complete the toughest basic training the Department of Defense has to offer, you can proudly claim the title of United States Navy
