Daily news networks have a new headline about riots or violence almost every month. Recently, several riots broke out in Ferguson, Missouri over Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager, who was shot and killed by a white police officer. A large group of people lashed out and started fighting for what they believe in. Unfortunately, the riot has spread to more places than just Ferguson. BBC News in Ferguson states that “thousands of people also protested in other US cities, from Los Angeles to New York” (BBC News). Unfortunately, countless people are killed or seriously injured during these riots. Riots are used in a negative way. In fact, an abundance of riots stem from situations between the police and young interurban black males. According to Jake Halpern: “Over the past year, a series of police killings of African Americans across the country have sparked grief, outrage, protest and bitter debate. For many Americans this discussion, although painful, was essential” (Halpern). Although the officer was sure that Brown was attempting to grab his gun, it was considered a racial conflict. The officer's initial instinct was this because of the negative stereotype how interurban African Americans are portrayed; regardless, that doesn't make the incident acceptable.
