Through my research I found that it was originally intended for preschoolers, but has become more widely used with many different populations and larger age ranges of children with behavioral problems. Populations that have been treated with the PCIT intervention include opposing preschool and school-age children, children in foster care with family or nonfamily caregivers, maltreated parent-child relationships, children on the autism spectrum, children with mental/psychological disabilities, development, children born prematurely with behavioral problems, and ethnically diverse populations (Cooley, 192).
