Topic > Sex Discrimination Remains in College Sports - 946

Despite efforts, gender inequality in college sports remains at most schools across the nation today. In 1972, a law to prevent sex discrimination in educational institutions, also known as Title IX, was added to the Educational Amendments Acts. The law states: “No person of the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (Walker, 1) There are five main points in Title IX covers. The first of the five is the prohibition on denying special aid to a person. This covers benefits, services, course offerings, extracurricular activities and accommodations. The second point touches on the topic of giving different options or providing the previous options differently. The third is to let one person or one gender “play by different rules” or behave differently based on their gender. The fourth point of Title IX is that you are prohibited from providing assistance or acting as a sponsor to any student or group of students. The fifth and final point is that no school can limit anyone from enjoying any rights, privileges, advantages and/or opportunities (Walker, 1). This particular act is extremely specific, but universities seem to find a vicious circle around it. Donna Shala, president of the University of Miami, says, "Those of us in the industry know that universities have been putting an end to Title IX for a long time, and will do so until they get caught." This shows that Title IX is not working as it should right now. One of the biggest issues female athletes face in college is the lack of funding for women's sports.
