Department of Ethics in Information TechnologyTechnology is in many ways very beneficial to our society, but how can this rapidly growing business be and/or will it be unethical. This article explains the power and information that IT staff have in the business world. Most people think of the IT person as someone who comes to fix their computer when they can't read their email. But what does an IT person have access to? Every company is different and has different responsibilities required of IT staff. This article explains how most companies use the IT department to monitor their employees on the computer. The article raises many questions about the ethical behavior of IT personnel, but does not provide many answers. This is because the question “Is it ethical?” must be resolved by each individual IT professional. In other professional careers such as Medicine or Law that have been around for a long time have a set of laws or codes of ethics that accompany the job. This field has yet to establish such rules. The article states that most ethical issues, such as reading employee emails and changing words, using keyloggers to get everything a specific person has typed, or screen capture programs to monitor everything they have looked, they haven't even been addressed by law, nor is there a standard that any IT professional must follow. It's scary to think about how much power and information an IT professional has access to, and the fact that there are no laws prohibiting some of the procedures is also a scary thought. If IT professionals are hired and have no prior discretion over ethical issues, how can we trust what they will do with the information they have about us. I trust that Southwestern's employers have chosen the right people for the job, but what is the American everyday office. The article states that some IT professionals even help employees fire others. An example of this could be: in this particular company the IT department receives all emails to check before they are sent to the recipient.
