• Baptism in (or with) the Holy Spirit is a very important and distinctive Christian experience in the life of the believer. The basis is found in the book of Acts, particularly in the event of Pentecost. • John the Baptist preached the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Mark 1:4) • He later declared regarding Jesus: “I baptize with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” (1:8) • 3 years later, just before Pentecost, Jesus spoke with the apostles about a gift promised by his father and commanded: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift promised by my Father, which you have heard me speak of . Indeed, John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 1:4)• Receiving the gift is the baptism in the Holy Spirit… at Pentecost the promise “All were filled with the Holy Spirit” was fulfilled. (Acts 2:4)• The same gift was later given to the thousands who gathered: “Peter answered, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. gift of the Holy Spirit. For you and for your children is the promise and for all those who are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God will call." (Acts 2:38-39)• Relatives and friends of Cornelius The baptism of the Spirit provides evidence that it is not limited to Pentecost, but continues throughout the years (10:44-46) Peter states that it is the baptism in the Holy Spirit in 11:16• 1 Cor. 12:13 (For we have been all baptized in (1722) one Spirit into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and all were given to drink one Spirit). Provides a possible reference to this baptism, although this is debatable, since some translations read "by one Spirit". • In water baptism the Spirit baptizes us into the body of Christ, but in Spirit baptism Christ baptizes us in the Holy Spirit... This means a total immersion in the reality of the Holy Spirit in a that anyone who is baptized has a vivid sense of the presence and power of the Spirit. • A boy named Ranaghan described his experience: “It was as if I had been immersed in a great sea of water, only the water was God, the water was the Holy Spirit.” • The word filling was also used to describe this experience… Jesus promised that they would be baptized in the Spirit, but when the event occurred, it was said that they would be baptized filled.
