'That historians of the future will look back on our time - the post-post-Christian world and the post-secular society - as an era in which the man [or woman], at least Western man, had acquired freedom and abundance by leaving behind the world of gemeinschaft and entering the world of technological gesellschaft; then man decided that it was humanly and psychologically possible to have the best of both, to combine the freedom and wealth of a technological society with the warmth and friendship of a tribal society.
