Topic > Green Mile - 1125

The Green Mile has a huge connection to the seven Catholic social teachings. The first, human life and dignity, is very evident in the Green Mile. The main connection to this is how Tom Hank's character cares about John Coffey. Many people wouldn't care or even give a second look to someone who is in prison and on death row, but Paul, the guard, approaches him. He ends up really caring about John Coffey and believes he is innocent. He shows life and human dignity because when he has to execute him, he believes he will go to hell and can't live with what he has done. Overall the film raises the debate on capital punishment. To truly have respect for human life one cannot be in favor of the death penalty. This film shows how terribly cruel it can be for everyone involved. The Green Mile refers to the call to family when John Coffey helps all people. He doesn't have to do anything and knows that nothing will get him out, but he still does the right things to help the people around him. He helps Paul and then the director's sick and dying wife. This movie gives a message about how we should behave towards others around us. Paul truly understood his rights as part of God's creation. He knew all of his gifts and respected them. He knew he had a responsibility to try to let people know that he believed John was innocent. It also shows the contrast between how Percy behaves and how he is the opposite of what we as Catholics should be. The Green Mile truly represents the poor and vulnerable along with all people in prison. Paul does everything he can for John, who has less than everyone else and, on death row, is in a very vulnerable state. John Coffey also demonstrates this when he helps the vulnerable like Paul, the dead mouse... middle of paper... and by standing up for his beliefs. However, this can be very difficult in today's society. There are many people who judge you and will try to disrespect you if you stand up for your beliefs. People today tend to turn away from religion, especially in politics, where it can exert enormous influence on the world. Some people are afraid to stand out with their faith, so they get confused. This is not being a Christian leader. To be a leader, you must stand out and stand up for your faith to make a difference. You have to have courage to be a leader. It will be difficult but this is part of growing up. I believe I have already started on the path to becoming a Christian leader and am very close to becoming a good leader. Once I achieve this, I really want to make a difference in the world because there are many things that need to be changed.
