Collective consciousness, collective representations and social currents: the events that Amish youth will be part of during Rumspringa seem to be similar to what an Englishman, like you or I is shown during high school and university. The problem with Rumspringa is that the Amish have very little exposure to our kind of lifestyle throughout their lives, and when they finally get to experience it for themselves, they tend to have too much exposure. There are two categories of solidarity that we discussed during the lesson, one mechanical and the other organic. Mechanical Solidarity: A mechanical solidarity is created on the similarity between individuals. Importance is given to values and beliefs, similar backgrounds and religion. This occurs in small, traditional societies, where social interaction is close and intimate. There is less division of labor and individuals within the society do not have specific tasks but rather created based on the traditional expectations of those within the society. The Amish are an example of mechanical solidarity and this can be seen from the division of labor in Amish societies. The appearance of the Amish society stands out but gives them similarity to each other. Their choice of clothing to wear is rooted in their view of modesty and being quite simple. The division of labor is also structured according to gender. Men participate in physical labor while women focus on cooking and housework. Living within this closed society gives Amish individuals a sense of collective consciousness in which their traditional customs and religion play an important role in their ability to function as a whole. Organic Solidarity: An organic solidarity is created on the changes of individuals... .middle of paper...are their wishes and desires constrained in a way that allows them to participate in the collective?"Rumspringa is the time to eliminate any feeling of “what if” from their systems before deciding to return to church and the Amish lifestyle main disadvantage that Amish children have realized within Amish society is that the choice to be baptized is determined by age. despite the ability to make their own choices before they reach the traditional age. This suggests that rebellious children have no choice but to return to their Amish society, family, and church until they reach the established age. So children are concerned because it is thought that when one dies before being baptized, the individual is automatically assumed to be lost or going to hell Weaknesses in individual perception, Amish society should not dictate what individuals do.
