Comparisons between education and trainingEducation and training are two ways of learning and the phrases often appear interchangeable. Discerning the two is a matter of semantics for some, while for others it is a fundamental necessity (Loop, n.d.). The Oxford English Dictionary states that training is “the teaching of a particular skill or type of behavior through regular practice and instruction” while education is described as “the process of educating or being educated, the theory and the practice of teaching” (Gibbs, T., Brigden D., & Hellenber, D., 2004, p. Both training and education have in common the fact that they take place in both formal and informal contexts. An environment formal for education is a school, while that for training is usually carried out in vocational schools, seminars and/or organizational training courses. The informal context of both is when people undertake these processes away from the curricula and use/find materials through the Internet, DVDs, videos, and/or libraries to independently acquire knowledge and skills (Kumar, 2011; Loop, n.d.) Careful comparison and contrast of the terms education and training are done by clarifying their purpose, history, and the methodology (Kumar, 2011). Table 1 summarizes the differences between education and training (Fortino, 2014). The difference? It's the difference between knowing how and knowing why. It's the difference between, for example, being trained as a pilot to fly an airplane and being educated as an aeronautical engineer and knowing why the airplane flies, and then being able to improve the design of the airplane so that it flies better. (Essenhigh, 2000, para 2) The purpose of education is to answer the “why” question in learning.
