In “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator's oppression and repression are strictly based on gender roles and marriage. The women we see in the story are supposed to find fulfillment at home, while her doctor husband has trapped her in the room all day and given her little contact with the outside world. It shows disrespect for women in marriage. Maybe if her doctor husband understood her more, she could improve. Using perspective, setting, and irony, Gilman paints a picture of how many women are imprisoned by male authorities and also a realistic picture of the problem in human societies, the role of gender, and marriage of African Americans in Civil War medicine. From the beginning of the story, the narrator states that her husband does not understand what she wants and takes her opinions seriously. The narrator states in sentences, “No wonder the children hated him! I would hate it myself if I had to live in this room long” (Gilman 298). She says kids hated this room and if she has to stay in this room, she must hate it too. In the next sentences, the narrator highlights the line in which her husband says, "You know this place is doing you good," he said, "and really, dear, I don't care about renovating the house just for three months' 'rental" ( Gilman 299).She says that the room makes her feel better even the children and she hates this room. She is not interested in renovating the house which only stays for three months. Also, she thinks that renovating the house will cost a lot of money and that after changed something there would be other objects throughout the house, but it's true because he might not care what she really wants and the situation of his marriage He refuses... middle of the paper... it's the wife who thinks for herself. Most of the time, when she asks John something or tries to tell him something, he always ignores her. As a result, it becomes clear that the narrator's unhappiness seems directly linked to the fact that she is treated like a child when her husband confines her to the house. upstairs bedroom which is a nursery and she is not allowed to leave her cage. Even though this story was written 120 years ago, it is still evident in today's society. The household is run by a husband who supports the household financially, which leaves the woman to follow her husband's lead where the man of the house is always right. From this story, her husband's treatment causes her to suffer a mental disorder due to the yellow wallpaper in her room and attitude towards how she should be treated. It makes her unhappy and she never tries to figure out what she wants to do.
