Topic > Essay on the Covenant - 908

The Covenant occupies a central place in the Christian religion. It is a relationship between us and God created by a commitment in which one party has defined responsibilities. The type of covenant we have made with God is sovereignty. This simply means that God is our master and we are his slaves. Too many there may be a bad connotation in the master-slave analogy. However, I accept the fact that God is my master and I am his slave. He will never do anything to hurt me, he knows my needs, he will provide for me and he loves me unconditionally. This is very different than the way slaves were treated by their human masters. There are five aspects of the covenant. For the purposes of this article I will mainly refer to the new covenant offered to us through Jesus. The first aspect concerns the parties involved. There are two parties: God and the elect. Unlike the old covenant, the elect go beyond the Jews. It also includes Gentiles, or non-Jews, in all nations. This is one aspect of allyship that has helped shape my worldview. I've talked to people who believe that God chooses only a few privileged people to save and condemns the rest to eternal punishment in hell. I now believe with all my heart that this is completely false and even heresy. In John 3:16 God uses the phrase “panta ta ethne” which means “all nations.” There are other passages in the Scriptures, for example, when Paul says in Romans 1:16: "I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes..." He clearly says "all who believe without leave no one out. There are passages in the Scriptures, such as Ephesians 1:11, that speak of things being predestined for believers are in a covenant relationship realize for His kingdom once we have accepted Jesus and made Him Lord of our lives. However, He does not choose in advance to save some, and send others to hell! God created us to His image, so we have also been given the gift of free will to choose whether to love him or love the world. This is the depraved condition of humanity in our fallen state.
