Juke Jukes with Coca-Cola signs faded from the sun and soaked from many rains stood in gravel parking lots that served as ticket booths for the occasional shotgun house or single-wide. They were surrounded by sparse forested areas that crossed my field of vision as I was taken to my new hometown. I felt disillusioned as I watched the crumbling hoods of Greenwood, Mississippi, pass my window. It was at that point that I realized that, more than any other moment in my twelve years of life, I wanted to do something to better my community, the Mississippi Delta, and myself. As I worked diligently in middle school and high school, my strength in science revealed itself and my love for the subject grew. My mother encouraged me to enroll in the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. This was the best decision I have ever made in my academic life. There, I not only got to experience cutting-edge science education, but also some of the best humanities professors in the state.
