Topic > Group Reflection Paper - 779

Initial anxiety is when you are “anxious to get the group started and keep it moving” (Corey, 2016). The initial term anxiety was aimed at the group leaders, but we didn't have a group leader and I felt the anxiety inside me. One of the feelings that accompany initial anxiety is “what do the participants really expect from me?” Taking this out of the leader's perspective, I felt a little nervous because I didn't know what my group would expect from me and how well our group would get along. I knew everyone in our group got along well, but after watching the video today in class, it was a little nerve-wracking going into a group session. In these group sessions, I would also like to practice using the listening skills listed on pages 22-27. Knowing, being aware of, and practicing these skills will only bring long-term benefits. When I look at listening skills that will benefit not only leading group sessions but also individual sessions, I would like to work on the practice of reaffirmation. I always feel embarrassed repeating words to clients, but in reality, repeating these words helps the client/group continue to think and process what is really happening.
