Topic > Plot Summary of Remember the Titans - 1253

Remember the Titans is a 2000 film that shows the true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The film highlights the relationships of whites and blacks and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It raises a number of questions, about what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting film to watch. I've seen this movie many times and every time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a film that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at the time, but also social psychology concepts through real life situations. While watching this movie I noticed many social psychology concepts throughout. I had never paid attention to these concepts while watching the film before, so it was interesting to pay close attention and see how many of them stood out. The film demonstrates the foot-in-the-door technique, social facilitation, deindividuation, ingroup, scapegoat theory, among many others. As a very real and honest film, it's easy to see why so many social psychological concepts are present. Our textbook defines social psychology as “the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior, feelings, and thinking in a social situation” (Baron & Branscombe, 2012). There are many strong characters in the film and they show these concepts. While there were many concepts present in the film, I chose to focus on two that I felt were most important. The first is realistic conflict theory. Our textbook defines it as “the view that undermines… middle of paper… relationships between whites and blacks, and how they learned to interact with each other in an era when this was not the way live. It shows a team making a dent in a major problem in the United States at the time. Through leadership they were able to overcome common thinking, and as I said before, it's really inspiring to watch. As Coach Boone said, "Make sure they always remember the night they played the Titans" (Moviequotes.com)" Works CitedBaron, R.A., & Branscombe, N.R. (2012). Social Psychology (13th ed.).
