Organizations are initially structured around tasks, and as the organization continues to grow, the structure within it takes on many characteristics. Not all facilities are beneficial, especially if they are lacking in some areas. There is a relationship between structure and size of the organization that influences the centralization of the organization. At higher levels, the personality of the CEO can change the structure of the organization. Structure within an organization helps define roles and responsibilities among members of each department and work group. The four general types of organizational structure are functional, divisional, matrix, and project-based. “Organizational structure is the skeleton of an organization” (Feigenbaum, 2013) and how these individuals relate to each other. The framework is a statement of current affairs, not of ideas, intentions, or improvement within an organization. When business leaders develop their initial plans for an organization, they examine how to design a company and take inventory of all of the company's tasks, functions, and objectives. The leader then develops groupings and orderings of job positions, departments, and human resources to accomplish these tasks effectively and efficiently. Technology, size, environment, strategy, and objectives influence organizational structure and its effects, whether classified as mechanistic or organic.
