Every individual has moments in life when they feel isolated and alone. When this happens, a person will look for ways to connect or feel important. The person will do everything possible to be noticed and appreciated. In the novel Famous All Over Town, by Danny Santiago, the main character, Chato, has many reasons to feel lonely. In almost every aspect of his life he is disappointed in one way or another. He must try to cope with a family on the brink of collapse, he must attend a school that teaches nothing "fun", and he has friends who are a bad influence on him. The novel reveals how he must endure hardships, which most of us do not have, to get through a day. By the end of the novel the reader begins to understand why Chato begins writing about buildings all over the city. For most people, home is a safe and reliable environment when the world seems threatening. Ideally, family members support each other. This is not the case with Chato. His home is the place where he feels most isolated. One of the reasons he might feel this way is because of all the secrets kept in his house. What worries Chato most is the secret that his sister Lena is hiding from everyone except their mother. He wants to know from his sister the identity of the man who hides his suitcase in the shed. He lies to Chato and tells him that the man is just a friend, but Chato discovers the truth. When he does, Lena is not very happy with him and says, "You're a snotty-nosed metic. Get out of my life." She continues, “And don't expect me to lick your ass!' It's... 'Go ahead and tell my dad, you little snitch, honey.'” (l0l) Maybe if the family supported each other more 'otherwise they wouldn't do it I find it necessary to keep it... in the center of the paper... down. He could have written more paragraphs on each of his main points. There are many other examples in the novel. She had EXPLAINED in more depth how each of the direct quotes and situations she used showed that Chato had been let down and how she felt about it. The reader could have gained MORE information about Chato's life. I wanted to know more about the relationship between Chato and his family. I wanted to know more about WHY his sister kept secrets and why Chato was so disappointed that she called him a little "snitch." To me it all seemed like a normal argument between a brother and sister. I wanted it to better explain WHY Chato was being let down. Overall, I just wanted to know MORE. He needed to develop each of these examples more fully. He needed to "get into" Chato's feelings more and explain them to his reader.
