Tim Robbins, who turned Dead Man Walking into a film, based on the real-life experience of a murderer convicted of raping and killing a man and a woman. Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who cares for Matthew Poncelet, talks to him about the issues surrounding the case and about looking behind other people's points of view. This film is full of emotions, especially on the last day because it gives the viewer the feeling of what the prisoner is going through that day, with the presence of the family, his last words and minutes and the passing of his last hours alive. Dead Man Walking shows scenes that are very powerful for the viewer. One scene is where they flash back to when he raped and shot the boy and girl in the forest. I thought that scene was hard to watch because it shows both Matthew and the other man raping the girl and shooting them both. There are scenes, however, that aren't scary to watch. At the end of the film, when Poncelet spends his last hours with his family, I thought it would be difficult to never see or talk to them again. I would feel like a disappointment to my family for doing such a horrible thing to two other human beings. Another is when Sister Helen Prejean and Poncelet talk about God and how he is a child of God and cry because they have never been told this before. I thought it was different to cry over something so small, it showed that he had been abandoned by important people in his life, like family and friends. Sister Helen Prejean is a nun who preaches to both sides of the case, the victim's family and the convicted killer. I think it takes a lot of courage, because the families of the victims want Matthew to die and both sides need to be recognized and supported. One family takes offense at the situation, calls her an "animal" and asks her to leave. Sister Helen Prejean must decide how she will handle caring for Matthew Poncelet and understanding the wrongdoing of his crimes. He comes very close to Matthew by teaching a sermon on the Bible and the teachings of Jesus. He considers the situation from a different point of view and confesses that killing is wrong, regardless of who does it. He becomes more attentive to the situation and takes it much more seriously, instead of being a useless prisoner counting the days until death..
