Morals and Laws in Antigone A crucial issue in Antigone is: "When someone makes a law that is known by the public to be morally wrong, the public should break his law ? Or should they cooperate with that person by obeying? Antigone felt that the law (no one should bury her brother Polyneicies) should be broken, so she took what she thought were appropriate measures. This is called civil disobedience “Civil disobedience is morally ed ethically correct?" The Nazis say one thing, and Vietnam War veterans say one thing. The Nazis did not believe that civil disobedience was ethically or morally right, because of the inhumane acts committed against Jews in the 1940s. probably has led some Nazi officials to think about civil disobedience, after all they were told to do a job and if they didn't do it they would be killed, as Adolf Hitler showed the world, just because some idiot person thinks something is right not to do it right . The Nazi officials are parallels to Ismene, because there is a law that they both knew was wrong but are so afraid to come forward that they simply cooperate with it. Another parallel is the soul of the Jews and the Polynesians. The Jews were caught between officials, liberating nations and Adolf Hitler. Just as Polyneicies' soul was trapped between Creon, Antigone and Ismene. Furthermore, both had to endure extreme pain, torture and horror. Finally, the invading nations parallel Antigone in that they both fought against the law in both of their times. Antigone fought to save her brother's spirit, and the invading nations fought to save the Jews. Civil disobedience is wrong even though it may not go along with any religious beliefs, but for Christians, laws are set by governments, governments are set by God, so what is there to counter other than God's own law ? Laws are made for the safety or good of communities. If a law were passed banning staying outside because of serial killings, how many would stay out late at night, not many. A law was passed not to steal, how many people are arrested and convicted every week because they stole something. So the laws are for the benefit of that area, and for upholding that law there must be a price of punishment.
