Supply chain management can be thought of based on the structure of a company's information systems. For example, the video I reviewed this week focuses on UPS and how they manage information across their vast operations. From improving tracking capability, to using trucks to key technological advancements to utilize. The advantage of using cutting-edge processes means that UPS can have a clear competitive advantage focused on efficiency and customer satisfaction. DIAD technology used to operationally assist UPSs provides a significant tool to utilize web-based technology for internal and external benefits. This tool will allow customers to better track packages and predict costs for management by being able to send a message to the driver's truck to invite them to pick up a critical package. Customer service is vital to the functionality of UPS and DIAD was developed to enhance those capabilities. For example, the DIAD improves customer service in several ways by illustrating real-time tracking capability that incorporates GPS technology with turn-by-turn directions. Additionally, it provides cost projection tools for customers and makes it easy to streamline their package insights on a mobile level. What's even more intriguing is that other companies are also adopting this form of technology, such as Costco in the retail market. (Costco Craze, 2013). The steps a package takes from pickup by a UPS driver to delivery involve more than just driving down the road and trying to find the destination. With the DIAD system it provides GPS technology to accurately plan detailed driving directions. The use of trucks is necessary to reduce unnecessary costs in terms of profitability during parcel delivery...... middle of paper ...... and for supply chain integration as it has been recognized as one of today's competitive advantages in a global market” (Ghobakhloo, 2014). Supply chain integration in an increasingly dynamic global market is related to the use of mobile technology. The benefit is that internal systems go beyond customer relationships, but also aid the employee's ability to accurately scan boxes; Processing information quickly is a key outcome to the longevity of UPS's core objectives. Understanding that all contributors need and use the information at their fingertips drives why UPS and other companies must invest heavily in information systems for their operations. As an individual who works logistically in the oil and gas industry, I can significantly imagine the challenges and benefits that these technological movements can bring to an organization.
