Topic > America's Selective Aid to Other Countries: Factors and...

It is surprising that a country like the United States of America, so in tune with the world, does not respond more promptly to atrocities committed in Bosnia. The United States is like no other country in the world: when a problem occurs, such as a natural disaster in another part of the world, it is more than willing to help quickly. For example, we were the first to respond to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and our efforts to help them rebuild lasted for what seemed like a lifetime. Also at that time our country was starting to slide into economic crisis but were we still able to send millions of dollars abroad? Helping a country rebuild is harmless, but if they recognized the events in Bosnia and chose to intervene, it would have the potential to spark a war. It was almost as if they were waiting for the problem to resolve itself. Sometimes, our country selfishly chooses the types of problems it wants to help with, and more often than not, it chooses what is safe. The United States of America is said to be one of the most powerful countries in the world, and I recognize that we have the ability to intervene and prevent these harmful acts from occurring. When atrocities occur in other parts of the world, they often go unnoticed for a time, but once discovered they are usually put to an end. It is the responsibility of our country and other countries around the world to come together to protect not only our citizens, but also those who live in other countries. It is remarkable that we can take a stand against violence of any kind and try to end it, even when our biggest cases of atrocities occur in our own country. I am convinced that it is the right thing to do to protect... middle of paper... any human being, regardless of the extent of the brutality. If humans do not have the ability to protect themselves; I think it would be very irresponsible to look the other way. We are all equal on this earth, no one is more important than the other. All innocent victims deserve the protection we can provide. Our country needs more people like Peter Maass who say to his face “Go out and do something about it!” Why does our country find it necessary to prioritize the severity of atrocities? These problems aren't going away anytime soon; The sooner we recognize them, the sooner we can work to assemble a more pleasant world. Works Cited Maass, Peter. “The wild beast”. 1996.
