Who should be responsible for preventing the 120 million sperm cells released during male orgasm from fertilizing the female egg? The context of this issue has been a social debate in terms of the consequences of an unplanned pregnancy and whether it is a female, male or both sexes' responsibility to practice “safe sex”. The introduction of the birth control pill for women in the 1960s created a huge controversy between sexual conservatives and the women who would benefit from the pill, but the responsibility still remained in the hands of women. However, as medicine has advanced and the possibility of a male birth control pill has increased, many wonder if the same problems would arise if a male birth control pill were actually available. To understand the effects of both female and male individual responsibilities on society, it is essential to discuss the female birth control pill, the male birth control pill, and ultimately what the stigmas and potential effects of both birth control pills mean. the pill became available to the public in 1961. During that time acceptance of female sexuality was becoming more common; however, critics felt that the pill promoted unnecessary female sexual behavior. The fact that a woman could partake in casual sex without worrying about becoming pregnant was a problem for many people in society. Although premarital sex was not entirely avoided as it was a couple of decades before that time, many still thought that a woman should not enjoy multiple sexual relationships. Women were expected to act or experience sexual feelings only towards a man with whom they were in a serious relationship. That said, the reasons to accept the use of female contraceptives... halfway through the document... or change the way sexual relationships work today. Since this is a one-time procedure, it would most likely reduce the concerns women have about the trustworthiness of their man taking a pill. This option appears to be the biggest step towards equal responsibility between men and women during sex. Additionally, birth control has had a huge impact on society. Whether people see it as negative or positive, it has allowed for sexual change and responsibility. Therefore, if both male and female eventually have the ability to take or be injected with some form of birth control, then who knows what revolutions they might bring about.
