The color of money in The Great GatsbyAn important aspect of The Great Gatsby was the effect that money has on each of the characters. Money influenced Daisy's love, influenced Tom's life, influenced Nick's desires, Jordan's standards, and also influenced Gatsby to gain what he lost. The effect that money has on Daisy is evident from the beginning. She is married to a rich man who she says she loves. The love for her husband is not the same love she had with other men. This love is mainly influenced by the amount of money he has. She experienced true love, but not with her husband or a rich man. The story tells us about her love with a poor man when she was younger and lived in Tennessee. Daisy came from a wealthy family, so she was expected to marry a rich man, regardless of whether she truly loved him or not. Not only did money influence who she was interested in, but also how she looked at anyone who didn't have any. Money also influenced Tom, Daisy's husband. Tom has always been rich. He was born into wealth and raised in it. Tom's money was considered old money which also said he was influential. Tom looked at people who had no money as if they were nobody. Tom had a mistress who had no money, but he never thought of marrying her because she was poor. Tom treats people however he wants because he has money and they don't. Nick is a man who has a decent amount of money, but is struggling to live the life he is trying to make it. Nick thinks that money is the only thing in the world. He is struggling to earn more so he can live the life he wants. Nick visits his cousin Daisy in the hope that her husband can somehow get him a well-paying job. The house where Nick lives also says how much money he has. The house is quite small, but it is in West Egg, an area reserved for people who have money. Nick was happy living in West Egg, even though people who actually have money would live in East Egg.
